When is a series counted as one artwork?
Oct 3 2011, 3:31 AM EDT | Post edited: Oct 3 2011, 3:31 AM EDT
I am a Higher Level student, my exhibition is 19 days away, and I am slightly stressed.

I have many artworks that are similar to each other (either in terms of the artistic techniques used or the expressed ideas). Such artworks are to be exhibited as series. My teachers also say that each series (I have 5 of them) is going to be counted in my portfolio as one artwork.
So instead of 12 'artworks', I am going to have only 5. But... every individual piece was time-consuming! I put too much work into them, and counting them as series also makes me lack 3 artworks because I need 18.

I wonder if there are any rules or guidelines as to when a series is counted as a series and when is it counted as a set of individual works?
By the way, my name is Alisa.

This might be a bit late but your work should count fine...in fact, technically, there is no "required" amount of work but rather a recommended amount....the amount of hours spent is more important. And from what you explained, you sound like you have done fine in this regard. In fact, it is better to have a thread through your work and to not have each piece completely different from each other. This is how artists in the "real world" do it! Hope you did well on your exhibit! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Thank you for you reply. I ended up making a few additional photography and Photoshop works, and I only split up one of my series to paste into my Candidate Booklet. That series had 5 works in it, and I divided it into 2-2-1. I also had a series of 8 works which I counted as one. For some reason I thought it necessary to fill in all the spaces in the booklet, but I was aiming at a seven, so I guess it was good for me to have a solid portfolio.
My exhibition was absolutely fantastic. The examiner was a kind lady from Canberra. She did not ask questions with difficult art terminology and she seemed to like my art. I will now be waiting for my final IB results.
