Clarification needed: How many assessment criteria for IWs?
Aug 26 2010, 1:33 PM EDT | Post edited: Aug 26 2010, 1:33 PM EDT
Hi, I am new at teaching DP visual arts and I need some clarification.
1) What is correct, Investigative workbook (IWB) or investigation workbook (IW)? I have seen both around...
2) how many assessment criteria are there for IW/IWBs, (whatever is correct) : I have seen two different documents, one with 5 descriptors and one with 8.
What are they?

Thank you very much.

Hi!

I have always called them (since the term has changed) investigation workbooks (IWB) ...does this confuse you even more :) ?

There are 8 assessment criteria for the IWB's now but what you might be seeing are the old criteria before they were changed a couple of years ago. They used to be called research workbooks (RWB) at that time. I still find IB stuff out there that has the old terminology on it and I have used some of but just changed it to fit to the criteria today.
The 8 descriptors are: cultural/contextual research, technical/process, investigation, depth&breadth, vocabulary, acknowledgment of sources, presentation, and integration. I am working on putting all my handouts and assignments up on this wiki and there are some that address these issues. Hope this helps!

Hi Michelle,

Do you expect the students to include all 8 criteria in their IWB for each studio work they complete? I have been asking my students to do a brainstorm, artist reference, subject research, thumbnail sketches, media test, process record and reflection for each studio work.

What do you do?

Hi Emily,
There is not a clear cut answer for this question...I think that they should be aware of the criteria and do as you have stated in your question (especially in the beginning) but as they get further into the program they might not include all of that for every piece. They might have a series of works that does not require it all but overall there should be a balance. Perhaps they have already brainstormed ideas previously and just need to refine the idea...they should do further investigation to gain more depth but it might just be further research into an artist or idea they have already begun exploring. I think they should always show their process and reflections are always good as well. In my class there is always a lot more structure in the first year with a gradual progression towards more independence but I use the rubrics that have all the IB criteria on them when grading and giving feedback and I let them know if there is an area that needs more attention. I hope this helps!
