IB art themes

I found this answer about themes on Yahoo answers and thought it was a good explanation:

"The first thing I suggest is really to think about who you are and the what events have occurred that have greatly impacted your life. IB is very big on you understanding "art in context" so its important for you to show an awareness of this on a personal, local, and global level. Once you begin to consider these things, then you can find some ideas that can be investigated through time and culture. For example, if you're Catholic you go through a process that leads to taking your first communion....what's that all about? Where did it come from? How has it changed through history? How is it different in different cultures? How has this idea been represented through time? Allow your ideas to evolve, it's not necessary to stay on a strict theme...it is important to show connections between ideas."

How do you generate ideas?
Do you find this valuable?

Great advice. One adendum* to it though. Even though it's a great idea to draw from your own heritage, you can fall into the trap of not enjoying or not being inspired by this subject and context. So, in general, its usually better to start with things you like (maybe a hobby, an artist, etc.), and reflect on the reasons you like those things. That will give you a way to expand outward from something you enjoy directly, to a context in which you can comment and reflect upon society and culture. For example, I love capitalism, art rebellions, and generally any iconic American symbols (like blue jeans and Coke). In reflecting upon those things I can find the reason that I enjoy these things is because they remind me of the opportunity, freedom, and general awesomeness of the country that I live in. So then I can take my theme, "Americana" and use that context to explore lots of different subjects (like partying vs moderation, freedom vs responsibility, etc.) and use my art to express the outcome of such exploration. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?
