_ 0		What Jump says about his artwork: "The headpiece revolves around the idea of how the Western culture affects other cultures and particularly the Thai culture. The traditional Thai 'chada' is an elaborate headpiece used in performances. In the piece I used blonde hair to create the chada which simply shows how Western cultures easily changes and replaces the traditional culture in Thailand, and that the culture is now a mix of Oriental and Western cultures - the braiding on the tip (traditionally western braids) and the weaving patterns on the front (traditionally Thai weaving patterns) also shows how the culture is evolving into a hybrid." .

All about Themes

Ahhhh...the complicated theme question. What should I do? What is a theme and how should I follow it? Does IB even require a theme? All things related to themes can be added and discussed here.

Technically, IB does not require a "theme" but a cohesive body of work is a crucial aspect. Just as artist's in the real world create a body of art expressing their ideas, so to should the IB art student.

To create meaningful art, an artist needs to find a theme or a topic with which they have a strong personal link. This fits in with the IB criteria of relevance in which you create work that is meaningful and relevant to YOU. Where is the artist in the work? Think of a camera. Your theme is the lens through which you approach your work. It can, of course, change and evolve (indeed, it should!) and that change and evolution should be well documented in the IWB. So this idea of theme is not a rigid one but should flow from one into the next so that your work is connected. Your studio pieces should not be completely different ideas and therefore your work is disconnected.

"This 36 pages free eBook is a collection of 17 practical exercises for artists. I have learned some of them over the years and designed some to fulfill my own needs. I am a painter, so most of these exercises are visual ones. However, many of them do not require specific artistic skills and are suitable for anyone regardless of their age or level of artistic ability.

These exercises are varied and you probably already own most of the required materials.

You can use them as warm-up before you start a new project or as a way to explore new avenues. I also hope teachers will use these exercises in their classes as they are great fun."

As the Creator for the IB Art Online Studio, I am consistently amazed and inspired by what I learn from other people around the world and all the wealth of collaborative information out there. Perhaps this is why I am in awe that the IB Art Online Studio was recently nominated for the Best Educational Wiki in the 2011 Edublogs Awards and I am extremely grateful.

The IB Art Online Studio Wiki was created with the idea of connecting IB Art students and teachers around the world. With almost 300 members and 2-3,000 users from over 95 countries every month, IB Art Online Studio provides a central meeting place and collaborative community for IB Art teachers and students around the world, many of who work in isolation.

IB Art Online Studio was started with the idea of connecting and inspiring students and teachers but it has become more than I could have imagined 4 years ago. A valuable resource for many, it is my hope that this database will continue to grow. Imagine this...if the 2-3,000 users every month contributed one piece of information what a wealth of information, resources, and inspiration we could grow.

Hemangini Acrylic on paper This was the first final piece of work that i had made. I started with acrylic on paper and I finished with pencil colours. I was basically playing around with the techniques of acrylic paint such,wet on wet,wet on dry,etc. My topic was portraits and for this particular painting I tried to bring out pain and loneliness which one receives after staying away from home. And for me,it means a lot,since I stay away from and that also in a different country,which means different cultures. Hemangini Collage I was supposed to cut any picture from a magazine and build up the rest of the image. So I chose the face because I wanted to link it to my topic,portraits. Basically,I tried to show how our lives revolve around and what are the stages that we are likely to meet.
Hemangini Charcoal and dry pastels on paper This again was a task. But this time,I had to build up on what my teacher had done. She had just done the two circles which are the two faces and one line which is the stick. I chose to explore with different medium. I used charcoal and dry pastels. The secret behind this painting is that there are actually 3 faces and not two.
Hemangini Collage I call this collage 'The Drowning Man'. This was one of the first works that I had done at the beginning of my IB year. I was exploring with lines at that time,not knowing that I'll make a collage out of it. I learnt a lot while making this collage.
Hemangini Acrylic and oil pastels on canvas At first when I had started making the background,I was just using the techniques of acrylic paint but when i actually sat down to think of what i can do with it,I saw an image in itself. I saw a statue of Lord Ganesh. Then I decided to finish the painting with oil pestles,keeping in mind Pablo Picasso.	Western influence on Thai culture

I've always preferred watercolor, and I loved the variance of colors in the original photograph. Boats reminded me of Thai canals and freedom. By the way, I'm sorry about the quality of the photo. It was taken with my cell phone.

'The Beautiful(ness)' By Superartista This is my first IB project. The Unit is called Tapescreen. So there are 3 subjects in this painting which I have found from magazines. The woman is from an ads page, the golden bracelets are from Tiffany ads and the circular Thai fan. The art movement that has been involved is Art Deco. 1st step is painting the screen behind which is pink and purple-ish 2nd is use the masking tape to tape into the shape of fan and numbers, and tiffiny bracelets. 3rd is to paint the woman 4th is taking off the tape so it reveals the fan and bracelets in the screen color.
Oil Under painting Still Life ----> By Superartista This is my semi-second project of my year 1 IB at UNIS Hanoi. Some of the objects are personal and some are school's which I arranged and matched the theme to make it to have harmonious style within the composition . Underpainting let me to outline the form and shade to make objects 3-D. Also, it gives a sense of space of how objects are overlapping each other.
Oil Glazing Still Life By Superartista under-painting and glazing are oil traditional method which consumes a little bit of time because I had to add up several thin layers (after once is dry) of oil and also with more and more of the color's intensity until you get the true colors like your object. My teacher forced me to use only Primary colors (Red Blue & Yellow) because the purpose of this is to let us to mix colors of overlapping transparent layers. This second project took me three months which I also worked on it during my third piece at the same time. I love this method very much, it's a pain but very beautiful. By the way, the glaze can be mixed by Turpentine + Linseed Oil +Fast Drying Medium + Primary colors. (separate jars)
acrylic wash w/ black acrylic paint mixed with elmer's glue to add streaks, all on canvas. I chose to do this after seeing a butterfly-shaped smudge on the window of the bus one rainy morning.	Go on to the next Gallery ----->

Teacher Breakroom

At my school we have a room where teachers can go during their prep period and relax and give thought to the lessons they are giving to their students. Talking with other teachers in our own subject or even just another teacher in general can be very encouraging and helpful.

This page is intended to be a break room for IB Art teachers. I know from experience that many IB Art teachers are isolated and sometimes struggle as a result. Whether you are starting out and need direction from other teachers or you just feel like you would like more ideas, this page is meant to help. On the flip side, if you have ideas to share, please, please, please share them here. Add anything and everything you think might be helpful. I'm sure all the IB Art teachers of the world thank you!
